Welcome to The Branding Room Only Podcast where we share career stories, strategies, and lessons learned on how industry leaders and influencers have built their personal brands. Now, let's get started with the show.
Hey y'all, it's Paula Edgar and welcome back to Branding Room Only, the podcast where we talk about all things personal branding, career moves, and making sure that you show up in full alignment with who you are and who you're becoming. So let's talk about where we are in the year. Somehow we've made it to the halfway mark, and I don't know about you, but these last few months have been a lot.
So, maybe you started the year with clear goals, powerful intentions like we all have. And, you know, if you joined me for my New Year's Day Intentions and Goal Setting Session, we all do, we do it collectively. Maybe you had that "this is my year" mindset, but then life did what life does, as I always say with my friend Sonia, "Life be lifin." The unexpected showed up. Maybe it was your health. Maybe it was family. Maybe it was grief or burnout or breakup or a breakthrough that cracked you wide open. Or just the steady, low, unending overwhelm from everything happening in the world, politics, injustice, tragedy, uncertainty.
And through all of that, all of those intentions and goals we set maybe got sidelined. And if that is your story right now, let me just say this: You are not behind, and baby, you are not alone. You still deserve your goals, and you still deserve what's next.
Now again, I started off a little bit on the low point. Maybe you are on the other side of the spectrum. Maybe you have been laser focused this year, and you've hit all of your milestones, built your habits that are sticking, and you are in the groove.
First of all, if that's you, congrats. That's incredible and I'm proud of you. But secondly, it's still time to pause. Because if you've made big moves already, now is the perfect moment to reflect, celebrate your progress, and maybe even set some new intentions and goals for the second half of the year and beyond.
So whether you are feeling off track or totally on point, this episode, my friends, is for you, because now is the time to reset. And y'all know I love an acronym, so of course we're going to use RESET to walk through this together. Five steps to help you reflect, recenter, and align your goals, your personal brand, and, oh baby, your next chapter. Let's jump in, let's go.
First, we're going to start with the R. We need to reflect, we need to reflect on your why. Before we get to what's next, we have to look at what's behind us. Like I started off the podcast with, what's been going on in these last six months, right?
And this part of the process is not about making you regret anything. It's about making you, and helping us, to think and then focus on what we want to do going forward and return to that purpose. Why did you set goals or intentions at the beginning of the year? What were you chasing, healing, building, or becoming?
So this is your chance to reconnect with your original why, or to recognize that your motivations and needs have shifted. I know mine have. That is okay. In fact, like the meme, that's growth.
So a couple of reflection questions here. What was your word or theme of the year? And does it still resonate? Mine was move, if you remember. What goals or intentions felt most meaningful to you in January, and do they still align now? And what has surprised you about the world, your life, or yourself since the year began? So that's Reflect.
Moving on, let's get to the E, evaluate what's working and what's not. This, my friends, is the truth-telling checkpoint. It is hard. And even as I guide you through this, I'm telling you that for myself, this is a challenge too.
And, you know, I don't want it to seem like it's about pointing fingers, because it's not. It's about getting clear on what's actually going to help move you forward. So think, what's been fueling your momentum and what's been getting in the way? Has it been you?
It is easy to stay in emotion without stopping to check the map, right? But I think we need to pause and take a moment to assess. Are your routines, your commitments, and your relationships supporting your progress, or are they quietly—or maybe even loudly—sabotaging it?
So some reflection questions here. What habits or routines have helped you to stay focused or grounded? What people, spaces, or commitments have drained your energy?
I have to double-click on that one, because that's where I am sitting right now and thinking about that. Also, where have you made progress, even if it wasn't linear or perfect?
Like, doing that reflection and that evaluation will help you to figure out what you need to do to pivot going forward.
Okay, let's move on to the S, set new priorities, right? So now we have reflected on what's gone on, we've thought about maybe what's getting in the way and what's working and what's not. Now it's time to think about what are our new intentions, what are our new goals?
Let's be real, some of the goals we made in January no longer serve the version of who we are today. And that is not failure, it is evolution. Our intentions and our goals, just like our personal brands, must and should evolve.
So this is your moment to reset based on what's true for you now, not what sounded good six months ago. So think, what matters most moving forward? What deserves your full attention and care?
So reflection questions for you here. What is most important to you right now, personally and professionally? And if you can focus on one goal for the next three months, say, what would that be?
And again, you know, that my podcast is kind of like my self-therapy that I just bring you on with me. What can you let go of to make space for what matters more? Even saying that.
Okay, next up, now you've redefined your priorities, we're going to come to what is next, the E, energizing your commitment. Because what's the point of clarity without energy, right? That's just making a list.
So here's where you want to reconnect to the drive and the support systems that you need to actually follow through. Think about how to keep your momentum going. What is it that makes you focus? And you're thinking about your why. Who are the people who you're accountable to, etc.
So not just through the grinding, but how can you align your goals, your intentions, and the support that you need? What will help you to stay present, accountable, and energized?
So here's some reflection questions. What supports or systems will help you follow through on your priorities? What routines help you feel your best? And again, self-therapy, what boundaries do you need to protect your focus and your energy?
Finally, we land on the T and that is for take action. This is where you turn your intentions into movement. All of the reflection and planning that you can do, it doesn't matter unless you put it into play.
I want you to remember that this is not "you need to catch up." It is "you need to just now realign what matters most to you right now." Your next move doesn't have to be huge. It just has to happen.
Take one step. Make one call. Block one hour. Ask one question. Let's start now.
So what's one action that you can take this week to move forward with intention? Ask yourself, who can I share my goals with for accountability or encouragement?
Then ask yourself, how will I celebrate progress and not just results? Because remember, the whole reason why I shifted from just doing a goal-setting session in January and made it intentions is because intentions support celebration of the entire process, not just the end result.
So let's run it back, y'all. For your mid-year reset, we are going to: Reflect, Evaluate, Set new priorities, Energize your commitments, and then Take action.
This is from me, Coach Paula, for you. You've got time, you've got space, you have everything that you need to finish the year with clarity and intention. I know because you're listening to this that you are ready to either keep going or start again.
As always, I am cheering you on. I want to hear about what your reset looks like. I want you to share your thoughts with me on LinkedIn, or tag somebody who could use a reset of their own. Or just send me a message, send me an email, and join me in my upcoming mid-year goal setting session.
I want to be your partner in this. I want us to do this life and this branding journey together.
So until next time, keep showing up with purpose and intention, and keep building your brand because the next chapter, the next six months, the end of this year starts with what you do today.
